Drinks That Keep Your Mouth Properly Hydrated Without Causing Damage

At one time or another, we’ve all experienced a dry mouth or chapped lips. More often than not, this is due to a lack of hydration. Dehydration can occur for a number of reasons. Even healthy activities like a morning run or an intense yoga session can cause you to sweat enough to require a hydrating beverage to get your body back in balance. Many times, drinking a good amount of water will do the trick. Then there are other times, especially if you suffer from a chronically dry mouth (xerostomia), that you may need a beverage that’s even more hydrating than water to keep your mouth sufficiently moist.

What Drinks Will Keep My Mouth Hydrated?

There is no denying that drinking plenty of water will go a long way in keeping your entire body hydrated, including your mouth. However, sometimes water can get a little boring and you’d like a little more flavor with your hydration. The good news is that there are several tasty drinks other than water that are just as, if not more, hydrating. It may come as a surprise that milk is one of these beverages. Milk is more effective at rehydration because it remains in your body longer than water. It also provides calcium, B vitamins, and protein that promote healthy teeth.

In addition, you can spruce up your water by adding fresh lemon juice and a pinch of salt to increase its hydrating power. Smoothies are another great way to hydrate. Fresh fruits and leafy vegetables contain water naturally, and as long as you don’t add sugar to your smoothies, they will provide plenty of vitamins and minerals to promote your oral health. Other super-hydrating beverages include unsweetened coconut water, chlorophyll water, aloe vera juice, fruit-infused water, and green tea. Drinking all of these beverages is a way to bring new life to your hydrating routine without causing damage to your teeth.

There is no real substitute for water when it comes to beverages you can drink in large amounts. However, it’s nice to throw in other hydrating beverages here in there to break the monotony. So, continue to hydrate your mouth and don’t forget to call our office to schedule your next routine visit.
